little poems

“Herzstück” by Heiner Müller

ONE: May I lay my heart at your feet.
TWO: If you don't dirty my floor.
ONE: My heart is pure.
TWO: We'll see about that.
ONE: I can't get it out.
TWO: Do you want me to help you.
ONE: If you don't mind.
TWO: It's my pleasure. I can't get it out either.
ONE: howls
TWO: I'll operate it out for you. What have I got a penknife for.
We'll have that in a minute. Work and don't despair.
There, that's done.
But it's a brick. Your heart is a brick.
ONE: But it beats only for you.
